Gandabherunda

This was part of a collaboration with Kalaki Collective to produce visuals for a client’s music video. The client supplied us with an AI generated character animation in the theme of their song. The brief was to provide the client an asset- a gaming or viewing device over which the character animation could be overlaid, and a looping visual to play to the background of a psy-trance track. Beyond that the directive was fairly loose- to take inspiration from Indofuturism, south indian motifs from temples and handicrafts, as well as modern trends like Cybersigilism

I conceived of the asset as a gaming device designed for use by Indian royals, with the base of a Playstation Portal as reference. And this being a “weapon” to do battle with, I wanted the the grips to take the form of a hilt of a ceremonial sword. The project really cracked open for me when I was able to unify the entire design by taking inspiration from the “Gandabherunda”, a mythical eagle creature with two heads- one that looks to the past and the other to the future, a motivation that resonates with my own work.

I took this from concept to modeling/sculpting, lighting and to the pre-composited animation. With art direction by Dhavalya Sagar of Kalaki Collective. The final video is yet to be released.
